Freshfields wins at the FT Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers 2017 Awards

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (‘Freshfields’) has been honoured with two awards at the FT Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers 2017 Awards. The firm was named ‘Standout’ and won in both the ‘Innovation in New Markets and Capital’ and ‘Innovation in Unlocking and Delivering Value’ categories.
For ‘Innovation in New Markets and Capital’, the judges looked at the firm’s work with the Asian Development Bank, with whom Freshfields devised Asia’s first certified green bond in an emerging market. This has led to a new way to fund infrastructure projects in the region. The structure will help countries in southeast Asia address any potential funding gaps for essential infrastructure projects and has already been replicated, showing the Freshfields team’s pioneering approach.
In the ‘Innovation in Unlocking and Delivering Value’ category, the firm was given the award for its work with the Japanese government to create a new framework for the privatisation of infrastructure, which led to the privatisation of both the Kansai and Osaka airports. This has set a new standard international investment as it relates to public private partnerships in Japan and has laid the groundwork for similar future transactions.
The FT Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards celebrates the most innovative legal work from lawyers working in private practice and in-house across the region. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony on 1 June 2017 in Hong Kong.
