Freshfields strengthens criminal law practice with new partner

Simone Kämpfer, one of the most well-known and distinguished lawyers in corporate crime, strengthens the renowned compliance and criminal law practice of our firm as a partner as of 1 February 2018. She joins from Thomas Deckers Wehnert Elsner, a leading criminal law boutique located in Düsseldorf.

Simone has been representing reputable German and international companies for many years in the fields of corporate crime and tax criminal law, which are particularly important for our clients, out of court and as a defence lawyer in court. In future she will work with Norbert Nolte in the field of criminal law at the Düsseldorf office, and thus belonging to a practice that has been one of the leading in Germany since its founding in 2009 and the entry of former prosecutor Thomas Helck. Together with former prosecutor Michael Moritz, the investigation specialist Thoralf Knuth and five other criminal lawyers, Freshfields now covers the entire range of compliance and criminal law advice for companies, nationally and internationally.

Simone’s hire follows a series of high-profile hires that Freshfields has made globally in the last 18 months in the corporate crime practice area. These include Ben Morgan who joined from the Serious Fraud Office in London and Dan Braun who joined in Washington, D.C., from the Department of Justice.

Norbert Nolte, criminal law partner and head of the German litigation practice, commented: “We are extremely happy that we were able to inspire Simone for us. She will enrich our practice professionally and personally. We can now comprehensively help our clients with all important compliance cases and provide one-stop advice.”

Helmut Bergmann, managing partner Continental Europe, commented: “Simone is the first lateral partner hire into Germany in over a decade. This is proof of what an extraordinary lawyer Simone is. We have no doubt that she will give further impetus to our successful criminal law and investigation practice in Germany and worldwide.”

Simone Kämpfer commented: “Freshfields has an outstanding reputation and has developed into one of the leading law firms in the field of criminal law and compliance in recent years. I look forward to contributing my many years of experience in corporate and individual defence to the existing team.”
