Freshfields advises Cargill on the sale of its global malt business

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’) is advising Cargill, Inc. on the sale of its malt business to Axéréal’s malt subsidiary, Boortmalt.

The transaction involves Cargill's global malt business, including 15 facilities across four continents, representing more than 500 people.

Cargill’s global malting business serves the brewing, food and beverage industries by originating and transforming barley into malt. Boortmalt is one of the world’s leading maltsters and the transaction will give Boortmalt access to a global footprint and offer further growth opportunities for Cargill’s malting business business and its people.

Entry into the sale agreement is subject to information and/or consultation procedures with the appropriate employee representative bodies. The transaction will be subject to regulatory and other approvals and is expected to close in the second half of 2019.

Freshfields advised on the M&A, competition, employment, tax, intellectual property and real estate aspects of the acquisition.

The Freshfields team is being led by partner Alexander Doorman together with partners Brechje Nollen, Winfred Knibbeler, Eelco van der Stok and senior associates Marius Weyers, Bob van Kasteren.
