Freshfields advises Beiersdorf on its acquisition of Coppertone

New York and Washington, DC - Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (‘Freshfields’) has advised Beiersdorf AG (‘Beiersdorf’) on its acquisition of the Coppertone business from Bayer AG. The corresponding purchase agreement was signed yesterday by both companies. Coppertone is among the oldest and best-known sun protection brands in the United States. As part of the transaction, Beiersdorf will acquire the intellectual property rights of the Coppertone business and a production plant in Cleveland (Tennessee, United States), as well as approximately 450 employees. The transaction is valued at USD 550 million. With this acquisition, Beiersdorf will be a leading player in the US market, which is the world's largest market for sun protection products.

The transaction is subject to antitrust approval by the relevant authorities and other customary closing conditions, and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019.

Freshfields has advised Beiersdorf in all relevant legal areas with an international team of lawyers predominantly from Germany (Dusseldorf and Hamburg) and the United States (New York and Washington, DC).
