Freshfields partners named as Champions of Women in Business

Two partners from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’), Teresa Ko and Sylvia Noury, have been recognised for their work championing gender diversity in the workplace.

Both Teresa and Sylvia have been named as HERoes 100 Women Executives by the renowned HERoes Women Role Model List which is supported by Yahoo Finance. Each year, HERoes highlights business leaders who are championing women in business and driving change to increase gender diversity in the workplace.

In their assessment of Sylvia’s success as a champion of women, the judges considered her work supporting female colleagues and her sponsorship of several inclusivity initiatives. As founder and co-chair of the steering committee of the Equal Arbitration Pledge she demonstrates her commitment to gender equality in the legal profession.

Sylvia said “I am delighted to be recognised on the HERoes list for 2019. Although we have made some great strides towards gender equality, we still have far to go. It is vital that we all speak out and hold each other accountable when we see fair representation is not happening, and work together to encourage women to fulfil their career potential and drive change.”

Teresa was commended for her work mentoring female colleagues past and present from the firm. Teresa is also a founding member of The 30% Club Hong Kong, a member of its steering committee and an active supporter of The Women’s Foundation. As the first female chair of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE) Listing Committee, Teresa initiated the discussions that resulted in the voluntary code provision for listed companies to disclose their diversity policy. Teresa has continued to lobby the HKSE to tackle the low level of women on boards of listed companies.

Teresa said: “I am very honoured to be recognised on the 2019 HERoes list. I would like to thank HKSE for the work they have done to encourage and support gender diversity on boards, and for effectively calling out all-male boards among new IPO applicants. These are steps in the right direction but we need to do much more, much faster. All of us, men as well as women, have a role to play to use our influence to effect change and redress the balance.”
